Thurmond Depot

May 23, 2015  •  2 Comments

Thurmond was always one of those places I had read about but somehow never made it to in person.

I wasn't sure I was going to make it on my recent trip to West Virginia due to the weather on the day that I traveled up to the New River Gorge area.  However, the rain passed in time to make the trip down to the river along the twisty road.

In person, the "town" seemed even smaller than I had imagined.  It is hard to imagine when it was a bustling town and a coaling point for C&O locomotives on the line through town.

I wished I had seen a CSX train during our short stay, but I'm hoping to return soon to this hidden gem.

Drove by the cutoff to Thurmond more times than I care to count commuting from Rainelle to Beckley...just never got there. Same way with Cass!

As they say, Long Ago and Far Away!
