I enjoy exploring, photographing, and writing about the places in my world and sharing those experiences with you through my website and
blog.
The collections presented here represent some of my primary interests in photography. They highlight my love of
Railroads,
Rural Americana, and the Blue Ridge Parkway of North Carolina and Virginia. In each collection, you will find a few of my favorite works which I add to on a regular basis.
A new set of work is the
Photo Squared collection which highlights a variety of images presented in the traditional 1:1 or Square aspect.
Some artistic influencesThe first photographer I remember knowing by name was
Ansel Adams. His epic shots of the West still amaze me and he was also a first-class teacher of photography. The zone system was the pre-cursor to the HDR craze and his style of processing was to me the first "Photoshop". He worked to make prints "tell the story" he wanted them to.
Another photographer I admire is
O. Winston Link, most famous for his work with the Norfolk & Western Railroad at the end of the steam era in the late 1950's. I highly recommend a visit to the
O. Winston Link Museum in Roanoke, Virginia if you are in the region. While I usually photograph diesel trains, Link's work still inspires me to try to make the train part of the environment instead of separate from it.
Another artistic influence on my work is Jim Harrison. A painter most famous for his Coca-Cola works, he celebrates Americana in its best form. He also does great landscapes highlighting the beauty of the Southeastern US and beyond. He has a
gallery in Denmark, South Carolina.
My current equipmentI currently use a Canon 5D Mark III and Canon G1X compact as my primary cameras. Most of the images in the collections have been processed using Adobe Lightroom 4 and the Google Nik Software package.
